Sample navigation

Here are some tips for some of the most commonly used navigational clues on Cranleigh Motor Club events.

We cannot cover every type of navigational clue used but organisers will help out if you encounter problems when taking part in an event.

Using the map each type of clue will cover the same route using coloured roads only from Pallinghurst Farm in the north west corner to Duncan Farm in the south east. (extract from map 187, bottom left corner)
Download A5 Map (Right click the disk, & select 'Save Target as', or print target) 683KEstimated Download time at 33,600=4mins

Example 1:The Herringbone. The route covered is the straight line from left to right missing in turn the lines on either side of the route. The first line, miss one on the left, this may mean turning right where the one on the left could be a straight on. The second will mean turning right at the cross road. Try the example for yourself.

Herringbone
then 600mtrs on left

Example 2:The Tulip. The route passes each junction from the bulb to the arrow (flower) as indicated. On some events the bulb or the arrow may be missed off so care should be taken. Try this example for yourself.

Tulip
600mtrs on left

Example 3: Compass bearings leaving a junction. Try working out this example for yourself remember it covers the same route as the previous examples.

ESE SSW SSW SSW S SSE SSE SSE E NE N NNE NNE ESE SE SSW SSW SSW E E SSW SSW. Then 600mtrs on left

Example 4:Crossing grid lines. The same route as before but now follow the route as it crosses the gridlines.

06 34 07 07 33 32 31 06 30 29 28 06 27 26 07 26 27 28 29 08 30 09 30 10 29 10 28 27 10 11 26
Then 300mtrs on left

Example 5: Passing over spot heights. Take the shortest route.

17 25 48 22
Then 400mtrs on left.

Example 6: Using a Roamer. Sample reference 0650 3025

With an eight figure map reference the first two figures of each block represent the grid square. In our example gridsquare '06'50 '30'25. Place the roamer at the bottom right hand corner fig 1

Fig1

The next figure 06'5'0 30'2'5 is the number of tenths from the respective gridline. Slide the roamer five tenths to the right then two up. As in fig 2

Fig2
The next not shown 065'0' 302'5' is the decimal 5=half Slide the roamer up by half of one tenth.

When plotting a map reference always plot from the vertical gridlines (Eastings) first. In our example 06. Next plot from the horizontal gridlines (Northings) 30.

Now try these on the map. 08575 317, 053 294, 079 2785, 053 3175
